Learn to Fly & Fix

In Mareeba, we are privileged to offer training for pilots and aircraft engineers (both maintenance and avionics) in association with Aviation Australia (RTO:30770, CRICOS:02425C).

While the flight training is offered to both prospective MAF and non-MAF candidates, the engineering apprenticeships are designed for those people who intend to serve with MAF long-term and as such, the enrolment procedure is completely different. If it is something that would interest you, please contact your local MAF resourcing group for more information.

While this website is primarily focused on the MAF Flight Training Programme here are just a few more details regarding the engineering apprenticeships for those considering it.

There is a capacity to accept two new apprentices each year to embark on the four year programme. As of January 2018 we have one avionics apprentice and one aircraft maintenance apprentice.

Trainees spend two years of the programme here in Mareeba, with block release to study at Aviation Australia (RTO:30770, CRICOS:02425C) in Cairns. The licensed engineers in Mareeba currently come from five different nationalities with a wealth of overseas experience between them, to share with those who are training. The apprentices then gain two years experience in the MAF PNG and Arnhem Land Programmes, equipping them with both the skills and confidence they will need, and also as an introduction to the wider MAF world, where they will ultimately serve.

There always seems to be a shortage of trained engineers throughout the MAF programmes and this apprenticeship programme aims to ensure that will be a constant flow of new engineers ready to serve where they are needed.
