Become a MAF Pilot

The Flight Path to Becoming an MAF Pilot

At MAF, we believe it takes someone special to be a pilot. Operating in remote, underdeveloped, and often challenging environments requires exceptional technical skills. However, being an MAF pilot is about far more than just flying.

As a Christian organisation, it’s essential that our team members embody our core values. We seek people of faith with strong spiritual maturity to join our multinational, interdenominational team. We look for people who will contribute to the work of MAF through both prayer and financial support raising. MAF pilots often serve as the face of both MAF and Christianity, actively sharing their testimony and participating in outreach to isolated communities.

Therefore, our pilots need strong communication and relationship-building skills, as well as emotional resilience and independence. Every day brings new challenges, so we look for individuals who can think analytically, make quick decisions, and maintain a proactive, positive attitude, even in the most demanding circumstances.

Aircraft & Requirements

Our diverse fleet includes aircraft such as the GA8 Airvan, Cessna 182, Cessna 206, Cessna Caravan, Grand Caravan and Caravan amphibian.

To qualify as an MAF pilot, you must have an International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) based Commercial Pilot Licence with an Instrument Rating and Class 1 medical certificate. This is the minimum licence requirement for all pilot positions.

In addition to this, you must already possess

a minimum number of flight hours, with a portion of these as a Pilot in Command (PIC). Finally all pilots must pass the MAF capability and psychological assessments.

Starting from scratch?

If you have no experience but feel God is calling you to serve as a pilot, we have preferred training partners to assist you in getting started. MAF’s team of experienced instructors have extensive flying experience and aviation industry knowledge, to provide ab-initio pilot training with a focus on remote area experience.

Led by faith

Lungpinglak (Ping) Domtta (right) has been with MAF since 2016 and is currently based in Timor-Leste, serving as Country Director and Pilot.

“I have been humbled since beginning my journey with MAF. Over the years, I’ve learned to take leaps of faith and place my trust in God. I’ve moved across several MAF programmes, often facing the unknown, but by trusting in Him, I’ve grown in maturity and continue to rely on His plan for my life.

It’s an incredible opportunity to use your God-given gifts and skills alongside your passion for flying.

"As a pilot, this journey has also made me more proficient, giving me extensive experience in remote bush flying and the unique challenges it presents.”
